Introduction
Reference management tools enable you to collect, store, organise and format your references in one place. They allow you to produce bibliographies easily, in a variety of referencing styles.
Once you have collected and organised your references you can start using them. In this post we will explore how you can use formatting options in EndNote 20 desktop to insert citations, edit references and change your referencing style.

The University of Manchester has a site licence for EndNote desktop which is installed on all campus PC clusters. EndNote desktop can also be used in conjunction with EndNote online which is a free web based version.
Changing your referencing style
There are many reasons why you might need to change referencing styles, especially if you are submitting papers to multiple periodicals or organisations which can have different style guidelines.

Inserting Citations using the ‘Cite While You Write’ plugin
EndNote has a plugin for Microsoft Word called ‘Cite While You Write’. This tool allows you to automatically insert citations and reference lists directly into your work as you write. The plug-in is installed on all University cluster PCs. To use it off campus, you’ll need to install it via the EndNote website.

Editing your citations
